It may sound like trance or it may sound like techno. It could even have rock guitars or an R’n’B –singer and a rapper in it, yet it’s always categorized under breakbeat because it has the trademark: tight, rolling beats and a monstrous bass-sector. The latest compilation from Exogenic Breaks, “Pyrexia”, offers a comprehensive view into the finnish breakbeat –scene, which has quite literally erupted into worldwide knowledge during the recent years.

Several of the producers featured in this compilation have already had releases on such UK labels as Botchit & Scarper, Defunked and Invader, and all of them have already released tunes on well-established Finnish record labels. The tunes in this album were compiled by Dj Genki, who has stood in the epicenter of the Finnish breakbeat –scene for several years.

Pyrexia is a musically vivid compilation, yet it manages to maintain a fresh and energetic feel throughout the album. The moods vary from eerie, hypnotic soundscapes to rough and rugged vibes resembling The Prodigy or similar acts. All the artists featured in the compilation are professionals in music, and this can be heard in the production quality of the tunes. A cinematic feel has been achieved in this album, the music tells stories of a throbbing urban jungle while caught in an alluring crossfire of towering basslines and mystical atmospherics.

One of the main elements in breakbeat is of course a good beat, and this album makes no exceptions in delivering that aspect to the listener. The beats ensure that even the most demanding dancefloor consumer will not be left cold, as this album is also set out to shatter the clubs while still offering an in-depth musical journey into the headphones of the seasoned couch connoisseur
