Koneveljet

Behind the white masks of Koneveljet are Aito, Oiva and Varma Koneveli. The band started as a duo and was originally named Dior in Nera, an experimental laboratory of electronic sounds for the group Rinneradio which Aito and Oiva formerly were a part of. However, it soon turned out that the music they were making together, made perfect sense on it´s own.

The ways of Rinneradio and the duo were diverged finally in the year 1996 and after that the brothers continued their thriving experiments under the name Koneveljet. Varma joined the brotherhood on a gig in Helsinki without knowing the duo beforehand. He was playing a dj set in the same event where Koneveljet was performing. Aito and Oiva invited him on the stage to play with them and their cooperation has worked since.

The trio has an extensive history with electronic music tracing back to the early 80´s. Aito, who has the main responsibility of composing the music of Koneveljet, was interested in early electro sounds, such as Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra and the like. That was also the time when he recorded his first tracks.

In their early days Koneveljet was a pure ambient project. Later they started doing also material for the dance floors and today it´s both ways. Even though Aito is doing most of the composing he says that he never could do without Oiva and Varma, especially on stage. The two bring the twisted flavor and wild samples on live performances.

The brothers refuse to define their music although they say that if they had to choose, they would label it under all encompassing electronica. However you can hear the beats of drum and bass, trance and house mixed with the strange sound world of ambient and weird samples.

Koneveljet is definitely a group to experience on live gigs and not least because of the visual dimension on many of their performances. With the help of various pieces of equipment, these guys make an unbelievably massive hi-tech live sound that amusingly sounds as if it is coming straight from a cd. Their lively improvisation on stage has flourished from their interest to jazz music. All tracks are open for modifying in realtime and you never know what comes next. Live improvisation contributes also to the composing of the material as some elements find their places on stage and finally their way to the albums.

To get tuned in to the harmonic and energetic style of Koneveljet we highly recommend checking out their debut album Brothers In Machine (2000). It includes both studio and live recordings as does their most recent release Hoax (2005) which was also well received by the audience. They are currently working on a mini album which will this time include only ambient material.

Along with Koneveljet, Varma Koneveli is doing dj gigs under the name of dj Borzin. Oiva Koneveli is working with the well-known traditional singer from Lapland, Wimme. This project features Lappish chanting mixed with electronic soundscapes. Aito is also going north as he works with the famous Lapp group Angelit.
